The Proposal
We come to meet you and learn as much as we can about your wishes – and needs – and about the site itself.
Once we have as much information as possible, we write a proposal to clarify the brief and detail the scope of work and associated fees to design your garden or landscape. This is the basis of all further work. The proposal is not the landscape design; it lets you know the steps we will go through in the design process. With timelines and costings outlined, we then move into the design phase.
The Landscape or Garden Design
Step 01 – Concept Design
A topographical survey is necessary for every project to provide the base for all design work. You either provide us with one, or, for smaller gardens, we can undertake the survey ourselves (for larger gardens and landscapes we will commission one).
We get to know your land and everything that affects it:
- its environment – built and natural, historic and social
- its patterns – people, weather, traffic
- its spirit, or genus loci,
- the constraints on it imposed by councils, regulations,
planning, budgets - the opportunities and possibilities.
We work into this our understanding of your needs and what you hope to achieve in your landscape and garden; we consider everything it could be for you. The detailed design process is built on our research and a guiding concept or philosophy. We design places that are perfectly functional, address your requirements, and most of all, are inspiring and beautiful.
We discuss the initial concept design for a Master Plan with you and amend as you wish. We might use sketches and elevations to help explain the ideas.
Step 02 – Design proposals
Following our consultation, we’ll prepare a detailed design fee proposal, outlining the scope of work and investment based on your project needs and aspirations.
If you’d like to move forward, a deposit secures your place in our project schedule.
Step 03 – Concept plan & 3D visuals
This is where your vision begins to take form. We develop a concept plan that thoughtfully integrates your brief, architectural style and desired lifestyle outcomes.
Step 04 – Construction documentation
To ensure a seamless transition from design to construction, we prepare detailed construction documentation, including material specifications, plant selections, and structural design elements.
Where required, we can also prepare Development Application (DA) or Complying Development Certificate (CDC) plans and engage specialist consultants such as engineers or arborists to support your approval process.
Step 05 – Bringing it to life
With your design complete, we can issue a request for proposal to a trusted landscape contractor to manage the construction phase.
We carry out a detailed handover with the contractor to ensure the integrity of your design is preserved, helping bring your garden vision to life exactly as envisioned.
Do I need a landscape plan for council approval?
Q1:Do I need a landscape plan for council approval?
Most new build projects require a landscape plan as part of the development application. Requirements vary by council and site, but typically include planting schedules, hardscape details, and compliance with environmental guidelines. We prepare plans that meet these requirements and streamline the approval process.
Q2:How much does new build landscape design cost?
Design fees depend on the size and complexity of your project, as well as the level of documentation required. We provide transparent quotes based on your specific needs and work within a range of budgets. During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss costs openly to ensure the design is achievable.
Q3:When should I start construction on the landscape?
Ideally, landscaping begins as soon as the house is complete and the site is ready. This might mean coordinating with your builder to protect finished areas while final work is completed. We can advise on timing and sequencing to ensure the landscape is installed efficiently without compromising the build.
Q4:Can you work with my architect and builder?
Absolutely. We collaborate regularly with architects, builders, and other consultants to ensure the landscape design integrates seamlessly with the home. Clear communication between all parties makes the process smoother and results in a better outcome.
Q5:What if my budget doesn’t cover the full landscape at once?
Many clients stage their landscape projects, focusing on priority areas first and completing other zones as budget allows. We design with this in mind, ensuring each stage works independently while contributing to the overall vision. Common priorities include street frontage, outdoor entertaining areas, and essential screening.
