Nestled in the rolling hills of Castro Valley, this 4,500-square-foot courtyard project embodies a harmonious blend of Mediterranean elegance and Northern Californian terrain. Named “Golden Aegean Terrace,” the design transforms a sloped site with a significant 9-foot elevation change between the front and rear gardens into a series of gracefully integrated outdoor living spaces.
The design strategically employs terraced levels to address the site’s natural slope, creating distinct yet connected zones that flow organically from one to the next. Materiality defines the warm, sun-washed aesthetic: limestone paving and golden-hued gravel establish a cohesive palette that reflects the gentle light of the Bay Area, evoking the ambiance of a coastal Mediterranean retreat while remaining deeply rooted in its local context.
A central challenge and inspiration was the preservation of an existing California cedar tree in the rear garden. The design respectfully incorporates this mature specimen, framing it with naturalistic planting beds and informal stone arrangements that celebrate its presence, adding texture, shade, and a sense of established tranquility to the new landscape.
In response to California’s dry climate, the planting scheme prioritizes water-wise and drought-tolerant species. Succulents, ornamental grasses, and silver-foliaged plants are thoughtfully layered to provide year-round interest, color, and texture without relying on traditional lush greenery. This approach results in a garden that is both ecologically mindful and visually striking—a distinctive interpretation of Mediterranean style adapted to the local environment.
Through its layered terraces, warm material palette, preserved native tree, and climate-appropriate planting, the Golden Aegean Terrace stands as a testament to thoughtful, site-responsive design—a private hillside oasis that feels both timeless and perfectly attuned to its place.
